Farewell to Brett Favre

“I cried like a baby today and I am not ashamed to say that. After all, a football hero has decided to hang up his helmet. For those of us who have watched Number 4 grow, both as a person, and an incredible quarterback, we are saddened by the recently announced news of his retirement. He always made games interesting.

…I understand that Brett’s memorabilia is in super-hot demand. There may be some folks who will take advantage of the desire for these sporting collectibles and I urge caution when purchasing any sports item; be sure the dealer is reputable to insure the articles are legitimate.”

He was the head coach of the Green Bay Packers of the NFL from 1959-67, winning five league championships during his 9 years. Following a one-year retirement from coaching in 1968, he returned as head coach of the Washington Redskins for the 1969 season. Lombardi’s record in the post-season was 9-1, the loss coming in the first of those games, the 1960 NFL championship.

With the Green Bay Packers, Lombardi went on to accomplish a 105-35-6 record as head coach (.750, discarding ties as was the NFL policy); and he never suffered a losing season. He led the Packers to a still-unmatched three consecutive NFL championships in 1965, 1966, and 1967; winning the first two Super Bowls. Lombardi’s popularity was so great that Richard Nixon supposedly considered him as a running mate for the 1968 election, only to be reminded by an advisor that Lombardi was a Kennedy Democrat who had campaigned on behalf of Wisconsin U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson (although Lombardi’s wife, father and brother were Republicans).

Vince Lombardi has become virtually synonymous with the NFL. This began during his career: he was featured as the face of the NFL on the cover of Time on December 22, 1962 as part of the magazine’s cover story on “The Sport of the ’60s”. Lombardi’s players were wholeheartedly devoted to him, and his emphasis on hard work and dedication endeared him to millions who admired his values.

In addition to Lombardi’s contributions to the history of professional football, Lombardi is legendary for his coaching philosophy and motivational skills. Many of Lombardi’s speeches continue to be quoted frequently today, and he is well known as being unequivocally committed to winning. One of his most famous maxims is “Winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing”, although he did not coin the phrase and the exact words he used are disputed. “Lombardi time” is the principle that one should arrive 10-15 minutes early, or else be considered late.

“”It’s amazing how much stuff came together in the past few days, a myriad of things,” said Brandon Steiner, chief executive of Steiner Sports, the company that will sell a majority of the signed collectibles from the Giants’ Super Bowl XLII victory.

…So how does one separate the valuable from the valueless and figure out what kind of keepsake is good for taking up space on a mantel for the next 50 years, and what piece might actually produce a return if a buyer decided to sell?”

So what’s the answer to the question? The story goes on to relate that the best move is to have an autographed collectible, and the more autographs on the item, the better.

Collector Harold Thompson says the double rainbow on this one sets it above the rest.

“This is the best set that they put out. It’s numbered one of one, it’s a NFL platinum, holfoil on a double rainbow film board,” says Thompson.”

“MILWAUKEE – Brett Favre probably didn’t do much to score one. But tons of Green Bay Packers fans are scrambling to find the gold-and-white knit caps he and other players have been wearing on the sidelines in recent weeks.

Scrambling so much that the team keeps selling out. That’s leaving a lot of Packers fans out in the cold hunting for the sideline cap as a holiday gift on sites like eBay.com. While the caps sell in stores for $17.95 – if you can find it – sellers on the online auction site are asking as much as $150.

…There’s even pressure to get this month’s Sports Illustrated from when Favre was named the magazine’s 2007 Sportsman of the Year.”

Gamed Used Universe is currently auctioning an authentic 1986 John Elway game used Broncos jersey. The auction ends in two weeks and there are currently 10 bids with the top being at $5707.00.

The description from the site includes the following:

“When he played at Stanford and finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting in 1982, few had any doubt that John Elway had the potential to become a star in the NFL. While some great talents never do make it big on a professional level, sixteen years after being drafted in 1983 Elway retired from football with a career that legends are made of. A nine-time Pro Bowler, Elway threw for over 51,000 yards while leading the Broncos to five Super Bowl appearances. Fittingly, in his last two years in the league, Elway led the Denver Broncos to world championships in 1997 and 1998. It was a storybook ending to a storybook career.

We are aware that many avid Elway collectors have waited patiently for an Elway jersey they could feel comfortable including as a cherished part of their collection. Fortunately, the waiting is over. Just as the amazing athlete that wore it, the use and provenance of this incredible white nylon mesh garment with hand-warmer pocket and team repair on the right chest places it among the elite game used football jerseys in the hobby.

Along with a letter of authenticity from the Denver Broncos equipment manager, this jersey was also evaluated by Patrick Scoggin, the Director of Endzone Sports Charities and one of the industries foremost authorities on Broncos memorabilia.”

View the John Elway Jersey auction here >>

UPDATE: Oct. 11, 2007 – With the auction ending on Oct 25th, there are now 13 bids with the top bid sitting at $8357.00
